Vacation Bible School 2006

Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 1 Peter 2:11,12

The focus of this VBS program was that we are in the world but not of the world. We are just visitors here, we are just passing through, strangers, aliens, pilgrims, sojourners. We are different and should never be ashamed of that difference. It’s not weird or strange but is something to be be embraced and honored and protected. We sought to inspire the children to live for Jesus and to give them some tools and weapons that would help them guard their hearts and stand strong when the world is tempting them: songs, scriptures, sayings, strategies etc.

Overview: The setting is the Village of Of, led by Mayor Maximus P. Hornswoggler Of III, whose master plan is conformity… life is fun and life is great but only as long as everyone fits in properly and conforms to his way of doing things. The Village of Of is a lovely, inviting place full of homes with nicely trimmed lawns, straight walks and square hedges. People love sunglasses and green is the favorite color. … and then one day a new family moves into town, the NotOf family. They most decidedly do not fit in… their house and shrubbery are rounded. They don’t own a pair of sunglasses and they love some strange color they call yellow.

Progression of theme: (Message builds from day to day) … God has a wonderful plan for our lives but sin separates us from that plan. We don’t have to conform to the world but can be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Jesus is the way…it is through Him we are transformed and have victory over sin that separates us from God and His plan. When we know Jesus we need to let His glory shine through us. ….we need to glow in the dark!

Summary

1

John 17:15-16  I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

1 Peter 2:11 Dear brothers and sisters, you are foreigners and aliens here. So I warn you to keep away from evil desires because they fight against your very souls.

God’s plan

As His children, we are in the world but not of this world

God loves us and has a wonderful plan for our lives. His people are special and different and set apart for HIS purpose to show the world who He is and to lead people to Him. (strangers and aliens, pilgrims and sojourners, travelers)

World’s message: “It’s all about ME, the things of the world, having fun, fitting in, getting stuff, etc..” Christian’s message, “We’re just travelers through this world and there’s something much better and deeper and more meaningful/significant…It’s all about HIM.” Being different is cool.

2

John 10:10: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Sin separates us from God’s plan

Sin separates people from God and the prince of this world does everything he can to keep people conformed to this world and from walking in the truth

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

Romans 3:22-24 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

3

Romans 12:2  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will

We don’t have to conform to the world

God has made a way for us to escape the plans of the enemy and enter into HIS kingdom, even while we’re living in the world

1 John 2:15   Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

4

John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me

Jesus is the way

Jesus is the way…it is through Him we are transformed and have victory over sin that separates us from God and His plan.

5

Matthew 5:16  …let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Go forth and shine

When we know Jesus we need to let His glory shine through us. ….we need to glow in the dark!

1 Peter 2: 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
